Frequently Asked Questions

Are my files uploaded?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser using the File System Access API or a folder input. Your files never leave your device.
Which browsers are supported?
Chrome and Edge on desktop give the best experience (folder picker and drag & drop, re-reading from disk on rerun). Safari and Firefox fall back to a standard folder upload dialog.
How does it decide a file was modified?
Files with different sizes are modified. Files with the same size are compared byte by byte. In fast mode, only size and modification time are compared.
Can it handle large folders?
Yes. Common heavy folders like node_modules and .git are skipped by default, content checks run in parallel workers, and long result lists are virtualized. For tens of thousands of files, fast mode is recommended.
Is it free?
Yes, Folder Compare is completely free with no sign-up.
